Fallen Heroes

“Tell me something, anything.”
She couldn’t sit in silence anymore, not while the world was ending around them, explosions going off every two minutes, the sound of children crying.
They were defeated, injured and waiting for death, they knew that. The knowledge that they failed humanity, the world weighed on their shoulders, as they lie in each other’s arms.

“I never told you, but I lied about my family, they are still out there, in that chaos. I ran away, changed my name. They think I died years go.”
“Maybe I should have done that. It probably would have hurt less, for them and me.”
They watched fire burn across the sky, a trail of smoke from the army they couldn’t beat lead into the city which now crumbled in the distance.
